Most cancer cases ‘caused by lifestyle, environment – not bad luck’ A study published in the journal Science in January, found that most cancer cases are caused by lifestyle and environmental factors, rather than being the result of bad luck or random genetic mutations. Researchers discovered that approximately 70-90% of cancers are influenced by factors such as smoking, diet, physical inactivity, exposure to chemicals, and infectious agents. This challenges the previous belief that cancer is largely due to random mutations during cell division. The study underscores the importance of prevention through healthy habits, such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, avoiding tobacco, and limiting alcohol consumption, as well as reducing exposure to environmental toxins. Early detection and screening remain critical in identifying cancer at its most treatable stages.
