Drug abuse, also called substance abuse or chemical abuse, is a disorder characterized by a destructive pattern of using substances such as alcohol, prescription drugs, or illegal drugs, which leads to significant negative consequences in a person’s life. This pattern typically involves the inability to control use, where a person may use substances more than intended or for longer periods. It also leads to neglecting important personal, professional, or social responsibilities, and exacerbates physical or mental health issues. As the person continues to abuse the substance, they may develop tolerance, requiring larger amounts to achieve the same effects, and experience withdrawal symptoms when not using. Additionally, individuals may engage in risky behaviors while under the influence. Drug abuse can severely impact a person’s health, relationships, and overall quality of life. Treatment often involves therapy, support groups, and, in some cases, medical intervention to help individuals overcome addiction.
