Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is when a microbe evolves to become more or fully resistant to antimicrobials which previously could treat infections caused by it. This resistance occurs through genetic mutations or acquiring resistance genes from other microbes, making infections harder to treat with conventional medications like antibiotics, antivirals, or antifungals. The rise of AMR is a major global health threat, as it can lead to longer hospital stays, higher medical costs, and increased mortality rates. Proper use of antibiotics, avoiding over-prescription, and developing new treatments are essential steps in combating AMR.
