Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease (LPRD), often referred to as silent reflux, occurs when stomach acid flows back into the throat and voice box. Unlike GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), LPRD in children may not always present with heartburn, making it harder to detect.
Causes of LPRD in Children
- Immature Digestive System: Younger children and infants often have weaker esophageal sphincters, allowing acid to escape.
- Dietary Factors: Consuming acidic or fatty foods can trigger reflux.
- Obesity: Extra abdominal pressure can cause reflux.
- Delayed Gastric Emptying: When the stomach takes longer to empty, acid can backflow.
- Genetic Predisposition: Family history of reflux issues can increase risk.
