Diabetics should not smoke. The health hazards of cigarette smoking in the general population are well known. In patients with diabetes, smoking exacerbates the risks associated with the disease. Smoking can increase blood sugar levels, make it more difficult to control diabetes, and elevate the risk of complications such as heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, and kidney disease. Smoking also impairs circulation and can lead to reduced blood flow to the extremities, raising the risk of infections and amputations in diabetics. Additionally, smoking contributes to insulin resistance, making it harder for the body to manage blood glucose levels. It is crucial for individuals with diabetes to quit smoking to improve their overall health and reduce the risk of complications.
