New Delhi: Sunday, 26 August 2012: To prevent the current epidemic of anemia in the society, one should resume the traditional weekly eating of Gur and Chana in a fasting state, said Padma Shri & Dr. B.C. Roy National Awardee, Dr. K.K. Aggarwal.

Addressing a health awareness seminar organized by the Heart Care Foundation of India, Dr. Aggarwal emphasized the importance of natural remedies in combating nutritional deficiencies. He highlighted that Gur (jaggery), being rich in iron, helps increase hemoglobin levels, while Chana (roasted gram) provides protein and essential vitamins to boost energy.

Dr. Aggarwal further explained that consuming Gur and Chana on an empty stomach ensures better absorption of nutrients, thus effectively tackling anemia, especially among women and children. He urged schools and community centers to promote this practice and educate people about the benefits of traditional Indian superfoods.

The seminar also included an interactive session where nutritionists discussed easy dietary modifications to prevent anemia. Experts recommended incorporating iron-rich foods like spinach, beetroot, and dates into daily meals and advised against excessive consumption of tea and coffee, which can inhibit iron absorption.

The event concluded with a pledge by attendees to adopt healthier dietary habits and spread awareness about simple, cost-effective measures like consuming Gur and Chana to combat anemia and improve public health.
