Coughing and sneezing are natural reflexes of the body, but they can release droplets containing viruses and bacteria into the air, which can spread infections to others. Practicing good cough and sneeze hygiene is essential in preventing the spread of illness.

  1. Cover Your Mouth and Nose
    • Use a Tissue: Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of the tissue immediately after use.
    • Use Your Elbow: If a tissue is unavailable, sneeze or cough into the inside of your elbow (not your hands). This helps to contain the droplets and prevents contamination of surfaces.
  2. Wash Your Hands Immediately
    • After coughing or sneezing, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. If soap and water are unavailable, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  3. Avoid Touching Your Face
    • After coughing or sneezing, avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs can transfer to these areas, increasing the risk of infection.
  4. Use a Mask If Necessary
    • If you are sick or have symptoms of a respiratory infection (e.g., cold, flu, or COVID-19), wear a mask to reduce the spread of droplets, especially in public spaces.
  5. Clean and Disinfect Surfaces
    • Regularly clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, and phone screens to minimize the spread of germs.
