People with heartburn should avoid chocolate as it can worsen the condition. One should also avoid other reflux-inducing foods such as fatty foods, fried foods, citrus fruits, spicy foods, garlic, onions, and caffeinated beverages. These foods can relax the lower esophageal sphincter, which is the valve that keeps stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus. When this valve relaxes, acid reflux can occur, leading to heartburn and discomfort. It’s also recommended to eat smaller, more frequent meals, and avoid lying down immediately after eating to help prevent heartburn symptoms.
