People with diabetes who smoke are more than twice as likely to experience an episode of severe hypoglycemia, or very low blood sugar levels, compared to those who do not smoke. Smoking can affect the body’s ability to manage blood sugar levels, leading to fluctuations that increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Additionally, smoking can interfere with the action of insulin and other medications used to control diabetes, further exacerbating the problem. This combination of factors makes smoking especially harmful for individuals with diabetes, significantly increasing their risk of serious health complications.
